Abstract:
This presentation introduces the Biodesign process as a practical framework for developing innovations in sleep medicine. It follows the three stages of Identify, Invent, and Implement, beginning with clinical immersion, need characterization, and need screening, then moving through concept development, clinical validation, intellectual property, regulatory strategy, reimbursement, and commercialization planning. A sleep-medicine case study shows how an unmet need in obstructive sleep apnea assessment led to the development and initial validation of an AI-enabled, microphone-based jaw-movement and respiratory-event detection system for home use. The final section examines what happens after a project is launched: how hospital and university resources, accelerators, mentors, industry partners, and early adopters help a team move from a research prototype toward a deployable product. It also explains how development milestones, early clinical traction, and a credible regulatory and reimbursement plan shape subsequent fundraising and investor readiness.
