Abstract:
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with increased risks of diabetes mellitus (DM) and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). However, AHI alone may not adequately reflect individual risk. This presentation will review whether sleep-study parameters beyond AHI—including oxygen desaturation index, mean and minimum oxygen saturation, T90, REM-related events, hypoxic burden, and heart-rate responses—can improve prediction of future DM and cardiovascular events.
The second part will compare the effects of different OSA treatment strategies, including CPAP, sleep surgery, and pharmacologic weight-management therapy such as tirzepatide, with emphasis on their impact on cardiometabolic outcomes. Integrating risk prediction with treatment effectiveness may help move OSA management toward more individualized prevention of DM and MACE.
