Abstract:
Sleep-disordered breathing, particularly obstructive sleep apnea, requires treatment strategies that are effective, patient-centered, and adaptable to individual craniofacial, dental, and functional characteristics. Mandibular advancement devices (MADs) have become an important non-continuous positive airway pressure treatment option; however, clinical outcomes remain influenced by patient selection, device design, mandibular titration, occlusal status, temporomandibular joint function, and long-term adherence.
This presentation explores how precision digital dentistry can advance MAD therapy through interdisciplinary collaboration between sleep medicine, dentistry, orthodontics, biomedical engineering, and digital health. Digital intraoral scanning, three-dimensional craniofacial assessment, virtual treatment planning, computer-aided design and manufacturing, and objective sleep and physiological monitoring together offer a pathway from conventional appliance fabrication toward individualized, data-informed therapy.
The presentation will propose an integrated clinical framework encompassing sleep-disordered breathing screening, phenotypic and dental evaluation, digital design and fabrication of MADs, titration strategies, follow-up assessment, and monitoring of therapeutic efficacy and dentofacial adverse effects. Particular attention will be given to the potential role of digital workflows in improving reproducibility, comfort, adherence, interdisciplinary communication, and longitudinal outcome evaluation.
By positioning MAD therapy at the intersection of precision dentistry and sleep medicine, this work aims to establish a translational direction for more personalized, measurable, and sustainable management of sleep-disordered breathing. It further highlights future priorities in optimizing digital MAD design, refining patient stratification, and evaluating treatment outcomes.
